Character Name: Ahiru
Canon: Princess Tutu
Character Background: Princess Tutu takes place in the fictional village of Kinkan Town, Germany. The town is taken over by a story: a man with the power to turn his writing into reality lived there, but was killed because the townspeople feared his power. In defiance of this fate, he used his blood to write a story that gave him life after death.
The story was about a prince (Mytho) battling endlessly with a monster raven. After the man died, they broke out of the story in anger, wanting to avoid a perpetual fight. The prince sealed the raven away with the pieces of his heart, and four were embedded in the walls of the town, sealing it as well. The man, Drosselmeyer, was able to watch how this story played out.
Others in the town were given roles in the story as well, and this is where Ahiru's story begins. In the beginning of the series, she quickly learns that she is not a human girl, but a duck, and that she has the power to turn into Princess Tutu, a storybook heroine responsible for giving the prince the pieces of his heart back. She meets others in her quest to save him; the knight of the story, Fakir, and a raven princess battling for the prince's heart, Rue, both of whom she grows close to as the story continues.
After facing many trials in their pursuit of a happy ending, Ahiru, Fakir, and Rue decide to throw off the shackles of the roles that were decided for them and become who they are. Ahiru releases her humanity, Fakir his sword, and Rue finds that she is a normal human girl rather than a raven princess. Together they find a way to restore Mytho's heart and bring peace and free will back to Kinkan Town.
Character personality: Ahiru, despite how she may seem at first glance, is anything but a normal girl. In fact, she’s not even a human girl. In reality, Ahiru is a duck, who is able to turn into a human due to magic, which both helps and hurts her. It allows her to be near her love, Mytho, who is a prince escaped from a fairy tale. The price for being near him, however, is an onslaught of identity issues. She often laments that she’s ‘just a duck’, wishing she could be a real human without the help of magic. She also feels like because she’s only a duck, she’ll never be good enough to have her feelings returned.
This leads to another very important part of Ahiru’s personality: she’s prone to thinking she’s not good enough, for both her friends and herself. She evens goes so far as to think she’s useless or unhelpful at the beginning of the story. However, along with the ability to transform from a duck to a normal girl, she also has the power to change into Princess Tutu. Tutu is essentially Ahiru, but with much more physical adeptness and confidence, although Ahiru considers herself a different person entirely. This is because of her low level of self-worth, which leads her to think she can’t be as useful as the princess.
The largest reason for her lack of confidence is her true identity as a duck. Unlike Tutu, she’s clumsy, both in her words and actions. She’s prone to falling over, getting lost, running around in circles, waving her arms around when she’s flustered, stuttering, blurting out embarrassing thoughts, and speaking nonsensically when flustered. She has a tendency to idolize people, often wishing she was more like Rue, a girl in the advanced ballet class. She also has a tendency to overreact. Even when she makes a small mistake, she’s very apologetic, especially to people she holds in high regard.
Despite her many insecurities and self-image problems, Ahiru is very cheerful. Although short term situations can make her overreact to an extreme degree, she can handle situations that are stressful but continue on for long periods of time fairly well. She’s kind to most people, even when they disagree with her or cause her problems. Though Rue tried to stop her from getting Mytho’s heart shards back, Ahiru still considered her a friend.
She’s also prone to bouts of depression, mostly due to low self-confidence. She’s constantly second guessing herself and wondering if she’s doing the right thing; despite this, she has a tendency to meddle in things she doesn’t know much about if she thinks it’ll help somebody she cares about.
Effects of memory loss: More confidence! Not remembering she isn't human will help her self esteem some, though not a huge amount, as she'll continue to feel as though there's something off about her/that she doesn't fit in, as she did in the series proper before she found out she was a bird. Slightly less awkward, too, in the same vein.
Personal area/item: The pendant she wears to keep her human, though she won't know its function yet.
Sample: Thread one and thread two.
